  • Fall Morning Surf Shoot

    BRYANELKUS_199457
I headed out for a morning shoot with Jason, Steve, Matt and a couple of his buddies. I knew my ankle wouldn’t be at full capacity, but it fell far short of my expectations. I wound up swimming with one fin on which effectively made be a buoy in the water and made it nearly impossible to line up a shot with the guys. There were some beautiful waves coming through and they scored some nice little barrels. I again wore my 6/5/4 Billabong SG5 and was way too hot so I think that suits just going back in the closet for a month or so…

  • Morning Shoot & Battle Of the Banks

    BRYANELKUS_198931
I headed out super early in the morning to get ready to shoot the Battle of the Banks, a surfing contest between surfers in North Carolina(Outer Banks) and Virginia Beach. We woke up to a think fog from the cold air and the warm waters. I headed to the event site to find less than pleasing waves. I spent the rest of the morning shooting scenic shots around the Island.

I headed to work for a while until Jason and I headed back to the event where things started to look better. We watched the guys go for barrel after barrel. It was a good show but the waves weren’t as good as in years past, nonetheless it was still a great event and some pretty great surfing went down.

  • Classic Fall Cape Hatteras Day

    BRYANELKUS_198883
It was a pretty laid back Sunday. The waves didn’t clean up quite enough to warrant a surf on the Northside of the island. I had plenty of work to do around the house and want to thank everyone for all the great emails, please keep them coming! Here are a few shots from today’s walk down to the beach and the sunset.

  • Elkus Photo on Surfline, It’s Fall!

Screen shot 2010-11-13 at 5.25.20 PM
I was at the beach this morning when, master East Coast Photographer, Matt Lusk told me he saw a shot of mine on Surfline’s article, Pre-Thanksgiving Feast. I was stoked to check it out when I returned home this afternoon after getting skunked on the south side of the island today. Thanks Nick Baines and Friend in the foreground. The Photos was taken last week in Frisco during, see the post here.

  • Sunrise Nor’Easter November 2010 Day 3

    BRYANELKUS_198680
I headed back up to S-Turns and Mirlo Beach this morning at sunrise. The crews had the road cleared from yesterday’s high tide. It was very quiet up there with only a few cars coming and going. There was one car in the ditch looked like they were trying to turn around when they found the ditch. The water was still coming up under many of the first houses Oceanside to the north of town. We will have to wait and see what happens at today’s high tide…

And the wind and waves arrive…
Before work I went up to S-Turns to see the ocean starting to rise and start over running the dunes as the tide was rising. Hwy 12 closed a little after 11am due to flooding and over wash. At lunch, I took a stroll up to S-Turn to see what was going on. I had a flashback to the November 2009 Ida Nor’Easter, with the water running up under the houses and the road covered in sand. The conditions were not quite as bad. The sand dunes were not leveled, but many severely eroded away and the tractors were busy trying to clear the sand and water for the cars stacked a mile or so back. I looks like we have a few more days of the strong winds and waves so stay tuned…

  • Big Nor’Easter on the way?

    BRYANELKUS_198353
This first day on North winds started today. It looks like the next few days should be in the 10-15 foot range with 30 knot NE winds. Should be an interesting few days!

  • Fall Surf Session in Salvo

    BRYANELKUS_198282

It was another great fall day in the Outer Banks. There was a breezy W wind. Jason and I headed out for a quick lunchtime surf. Besides the strong current, there were some heavy waves out there. Everyone had a few good ones until there seemed to be a rip everywhere you were sitting and we headed back to work.

  • Fall Kitesurf Session, Cape Hatteras Ranger Station Run

    BRYANELKUS_197977
I had my first kite session in over a month with Pat Duca and Dom. We did a Ranger station run. It was the most beautiful day, except for the cold windy conditions. It was 50 degrees with 30 knot winds. I rode my brand new crispy 8m 2011 Havoc and surfboard. I also tested out my new Billabong 6/5/4 SG5 Wetsuit and it was amazing! I was way too warm actually, but it was great to know i have the warmth when i need it for later in the winter. With blue skies, we started our adventure. There were head high waves and a few bigger ones on the outside break. I had a couple fun smacks on some of the mellower waves as my ankle was not ready for the more technical inside breaks.

    BRYANELKUS_198054

As we made our way downwind, Pat wound up dropping his kite somewhere between the outside and inside break and eventually had to swim in. The rest of session was a race around the pier and back to the house as the wind was lightening up, the sun was dropping behind the horizon and the wind direction was shifting evermore offshore. We made it just in time to collect our gear and walk back to the house with the most amazing after sunset glow.
