  • Going Away Party

Chris Stucky’s going away party was a blast. I got the camera out to take a group shot before everyone left for the summer. I also was able to grab a couple other portrait shots. Here are a couple of the shots.

  • Self Portrait

Well i finally did one… I’m not one who likes pictures of myself unless its riding. But i figured it was now time to give a try at a self-portrait. So here is my first go at a self-portrait:

  • Davey Blair Summer 2008 Kiteboarding update

Davey asked me to edit up a real quick wrap up from the Triple-S to show is sponsors and fans.

  • First HDR Image

I finally was able to create my first HDR image. What is HDR you ask? HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. This technique takes multiple exposures of a single image and joins them together into one image that has a “perfect” exposure. I have been looking at photos like these for some time now and finally decided to give it a go.

I was pretty excited on how the first image came out. It has a very cool look to it, but it defiantly changes the feel of the image. But because of the angle of the sun to the bushes on the horizon there would have been no way to get a decently exposed shot here.

  • Trevor and Bike

I always wanted to try a shot with a black background and the subject lit. I used Trevor and his bike to try out this shot. I was a little nervous about all the shinny parts of the bike and the flash and how they would interact. We spent about an hour and a half trying to get a good shot. We came out with a couple cool shots:

  • surfing portrait shoot on the beach

After a fun little surf near the Waves Pier, I got out the camera because i thought that the dark and storm immanent would make for a very cool backdrop. Ill preface that i spent most of the morning reading and studying different flash techniques, so i was lets say eager to get out and try out what i had learned. I again tried to use an off camera flash to start dialing in the strobist in me. So after the surf session I grabbed a couple friends and started shooting.

I shot with the 430 off camera (Mel was my human tripod for the shoot). I had the 580 on the camera with the diffuser. I kept the 430 at about 1/2-1/16 power and the 580 around 1/2 – 1/8 power. I just switched up the power and distances of the shots to play around and see the differences would be. The first and biggest thing i need to work on is the power and controlling the shadows. Overall I was hap with the results. Here is how they turned out:

  • Mega Squalls

It was a perfect sunny SW Hatteras day. With usual SW winds at 20-25 Carrie, Mel, Dave and I decided to do a downwinder. After a great downwinder from SDA to REAL, I was going to take a couple pics of Lulu riding up in The Slick. As soon as we got up there this massive cloud formed and blocked the light. Shortly after that the thunder and lightning started. Lulu headed in as i packed up the gear and headed back to REAL. The Storm came in quick, with gusts at 55+, waterspouts and rain. We all hung out on the porch watching the storm roll in. It looked like a hurricane. As fast as it formed it blew over and the sun was back out as if nothing happened. About an hour or so later another storm rolled in and I grabbed a couple night lighting shots.

  • Dre’s Left The Building

Dre had left Cape Hatteras. He came in the office on Friday to say bye to everyone. It was a blast having him around for a while, as he pushed us all in our riding and i learned even more about shooting kiteboarding photography.
