It was a beautiful day in Cape Hatteras, NC today. It was 50 degrees and sunny today. On top of that the sun was still up as I left work today! That means next week we should be able to session after work. Here are a few shots from this afternoon of the glassy Pamlico Sound.

Sunday Surf and Sunset
It was another stellar weekend in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The surf was amazing today. After a morning walk on the beach, I met up with Tommie, Greg K. (who was in town), Joel and Zack for really fun surf. We followed up the surf with a short skate session, then a sunset shoot and finished off with a great dinner with friends (thanks lu!).

South Side Surf Session in Hatteras
The wind was cranking today but it was still a bit cold to kite, so I meet up with Tommie and Trip on the South Side of the Island for a surf session. There were some fun waves that came through. I rode my Takyama longboard and caught a couple fun waves. On my way home, I stopped at the lighthouse and took some pictures along the way.

The REAL Retail Floor Series
I finished a series of photos for REAL Watersports today. In line with the rugged, grungy and industrial look, these photos bring the store floor to life by adding depth and feel to the images.

Retail Shoot & Tilt Shift Sunset
I did a shoot at the REAL Flagship Store for a local promotion that will be going on shortly. The shot really brings the store to life and gives it a little attitude and a 3D look. I’m pretty excited on how this image turned out as it’s a bit of a different feel than what I have done in the past.
This evening I played with the Tilt Shift Lens. The sunset photos were taken off the VIP Deck at REAL over looking the Pamlico Sound.

Sunset at Pea Island
It was a rather chilly day with a brisk NW wind in Cape Hatteras, NC. I headed out for sunset to take pictures with the Tilt Shift Lens again this evening. This time I headed north to the Pea Island Nature Preserve. Pea Island is a really great place to visit, especially when all the birds are there. Its quite an incredible sight with thousands of birds.
This lens is really pretty fun to play with because you never really know what you’re going to get. There are so many different ways to change the controls over the lens that it is always something different.
As we finished up the shoot, we started to head back south, when we saw the moon rise from the horizon. I slammed on the brakes and I got out the big lens and took a couple photos of the moon rising.

Canon Tilt Shift & Surf Session
I borrowed two lenses to test out this week. They arrived yesterday and I quickly put them to work. The two lens I received are the Canon EF 500mm /4.0L I.S. USM & EF TS-E 24mm /3.5L II. I have only briefly used these two lenses. I headed out for a 2 hour shoot this morning at sunrise. The Tilt Shift was the lens I was most interested in checking out. I have heard lots of talk on the web about these lenses and had to find out for myself.
What’s so cool about the Tilt Shift lens? The TS changes the perspective of the image. In addition, a regular lens with a small aperture gives you great depth of field, this lens does this and more, by changing the focal planes. This gives the images some crazy effects. One of the effect you get give the image a miniature feel:
After a great and fun morning shoot I meet up with Zack, Tommie and Julien for a very fun surf session at the pier. We surfed for a couple hours in the 45 degree air and the slightly chilly water, but with my killer O’Neill 5/4/3 Mutant wetsuit it was no problem. Mel took a couple photos while we were out there, including this one of me:
