  • 0809 Trip Day 9 | Traverse City

    BRYANELKUS_16203

We headed back out on another snowshoeing adventure. Back at the old State Hospital we explored a couple different paths that lead us to some pretty deranged and scary buildings along the way. We took a couple photos along the way. I also played with a red filter for one of the flashes for the first time and am liking how they turned out. I have a couple ideas that came to mind to try and shoot at dusk or night but honestly I’m pretty freaked out about being in the wood with all the creepy building around shooting pictures. But i think we’re going to give it a go.

Today we headed back out into the cold and snow. We decided to go snowshoeing in a park near by. It was a blast to go out and explore a hill with long paths through the woods. I stopped a couple times to take a couple photos. I think im going to head back there at night to r shoot some of the shots with some other gear.

Today, we headed out on another adventure. This time it was to Old Mission Peninsula. There was a nice little lighthouse on East Bay, so we took a look around, and had a great burger at Bubba’s.

  • 0809 Trip Day 5 | Traverse City

    BRYANELKUS_15903

Melissa and I headed out on a little road trip today. We headed to the coast to check out Lake Michigan and the towns along the way. We stopped at a couple places to take pictures. Once we made it to lake MI it was cranking. It was probably blowing 30+ knots. Needless to say it was a bit chilly so we ran around trying to get a couple shots before running back to the warm car. We headed back in time for dinner and a movie and called it a night.

Today was a travel day. NYC to TVC. Though, I spent nearly the entire day in the Chicago airport, I did run into Mark Brown and a packaging school friend Blair.

I headed out in the morning to meet up with my parents at a nice little restaurant a few blocks away from my sister’s place. It was a nice change from yesterday’s Starbucks. From there we headed to the Whitney Museum to check out a couple exhibits.

We then headed to the plaza to wait for Jamie to meet up with us. I stumbled across a very cool gallery. Peter Lik photographs were amazing. The shots were great but what made the gallery was how the images were presented. They were printed up on a special photo paper, which increased the vibrancy of the colors like a movie screen will.

Jamie met up with us to give a little tour of central park. I think this was my favorite thing about NYC. We had a great time wandering around the park hearing all of Jamie’s stories. Then we all headed to the Palm for the best meal I’ve had in the last 2 years or probably the next two years to come. Jamie headed home after dinner and then family headed to Wicked for the evening activity. It was a great, but cloudy day in the city.

We ran the streets again today. Hit up a couple stores and a photography exhibit.  We did a lot of walking and exploring through the city.  I also got to have lunch at a great sushi restaurant with a very good old friend Jamie and her dad.

  • 0809 Trip Day 1 | To NYC

    BRYANELKUS_15515
I get to the airport in the morning, 6:30 in the morning, extremely excited for my 3 flights just to get to New York. I make it through security and wait for my flight. I wind up talking to a flight agent about video and photography as he saw my tripod. Then we got talking surfing and surfing trips, as his son was a ranked surfer on the east coast. He was a really nice guy.

Later they get to call my flight to Philly. I go up to the kiosk and talk to another agent, to see if there was room on the direct flight that took off a little later. He hooked it up and I scored my self a nonstop to NYC. Whether it was because of Christmas or talking surfing with his buddy, I got lucky. I got to talking with the two of them after the other flight had left and they asked to check out my Cape Hatteras Photo book. 15 minutes later there were 4 agents checking it out, and they seemed stoked on the book. It was really cool to see them excited about the photos.

    BRYANELKUS_15623

I made it into NYC 4 hours a head of time… go figure that would have happened traveling on Christmas. I cabbed it to my sister’s place where I meet up with the family. We spent the rest of the day wondering the streets. I must say it’s a bit of a culture shock going from Hatteras to NYC.
