  • House Fire in Hatteras

    BRYANELKUS_20693

This morning I get in my truck to head to work. I got to the end of the street to see a fire truck sitting in the middle of the road. Great, no way to get to work. So Lulu, Mel and I just hung out for a while and took some pictures. The house on the end of the street had caught on fire.

The two older occupants of the house were airlifted to a hospital earlier in the morning but the dog died. The house was full of stuff and was smoldering. Lulu and I then started walking down Hwy12 hoping to get a ride as all the traffic stopped. REAL’s neighbor was up checking out the fire and gave us a ride to work.

Check out all of the shots here.

  • REAL Co-founders Portrait | Part 3

    BRYANELKUS_20466

So, if you have not been keeping track of this shoot, or didnt know, we are now on day 3. The photoshoot went well tonight. The conditions were not the greatest, as it snowed all day today. The shoot actually got under way rather timely tonight. We were up and rolling as the sun passed the horizon. I wanted to let the ambient light die down a little to let the features and structure of the building to come through instead of just a silhouette.

The wardrobe, by Jason, called for a REAL classic T, jeans and barefeet/sandels. Yes, it was still 32 degrees and snowing this evening as well. While dodging cars in the street we got off 3 decent run of shots off. After about 45 minutes of shooting and dodging cars we headed inside to warm up and pick out the shot. The final shot will be posted up after it runs, stay tuned.

  • Slider Search

    BRYANELKUS_20163
On a rather cold NW day, Jason and I headed out on a little road trip to Avon and Buxton. The mission was the search the land to come up with ideas for the REAL Slider Park. Jason wants to give the slider park a face-lift. On our adventure we stopped at the Buxton bowl for a skate session. We checked out the harbor and some of the subdivision for ideas and then cruised back up to Waves.

  • REAL Co-founder’s Portrait | Part 1

    BRYANELKUS_20124
I was asked to shoot a shot of the Co founders of REAL Watersports for a magazine editorial. After seeing a recent post online, it gave me the idea to shoot them in front of the new REAL Flagship Store, each holding a kiteboard. Chris and I headed out to test out the lighting and the right time to take the shot.

The sunset blew up for us, unfortunately, the Co-founders were not available at that time for the shot. After some testing, I decided to go with a cross lighting setup. This will light most of the face and then there would be a rim light on the side of the face that is not light. The shots taken after the ones posted here felt much nicer. The light was a bit harsh this time, and a couple more changes for the actual shoot. More to come soon…

  • Ramp 23 Session, Kinda

    BRYANELKUS_20003

Tommie, Eric and I pulled into Ramp 23 today at lunch. It was blowing 25 SSW and it was WARM! I Pumped up the kite and ran the lines, put my wetsuit and harness on. As I was walking to my lines, I look over to see my kite catch air and start flying down the beach. Great!

    BRYANELKUS_20010

I booked it for about a half mile, before I couldn’t breath in my harness and wetsuit. Looked back waiting for one of the guys to grab a truck and floor it down the beach. It took them a bit to secure their own kites, but then Tommie came to my rescue. I grabbed the kite and later found there was an inch rip in the canopy so I called it a session and headed back to work (with a couple cool drinks for the after session relaxation).

  • Snowkiting in Cape Hatteras

    BRYANELKUS_19733

It snowed all afternoon yesterday. Yes I’m back in Cape Hatteras and it snowed. Not only did it snow, but it started to stick. We all got excited about the opportunity to snowkite in the morning if there was enough snow. I woke up early and met dave and Tommie at SDA to check it out. It looked doable, though there really wasn’t a lot of snow.

    BRYANELKUS_19777

There was a nice thin layer of hardened snow/ice as a base layer, which made the kiting decent, but the roads very slippery (good for fishtailing and donuts). Dave and I pumped up and rode for a little. I rode the 12 Liquid Force Hifi, and Dave was on The BEST 09 Nemi HP. We were all a little sketched out about riding at SDA with all the cacti, but it had to be done. It was a blast, but more than that it was crazy that we were snowkiting in Cape Hatteras.

    BRYANELKUS_19862

I didn’t have enough. I spotted a picnic table at the morning session that I have been very excited to session in the water with a wakeboard, but the snow will do. Chris and I headed out during lunch to session the table. The snow was quickly melting but I had to do it. I took a couple hits on the table and called it a day.

  • 0809 Trip Day 21 | Florida

    BRYANELKUS_19254

I arrived in Florida in the late morning. I headed to my grandparents house to drop off my stuff. We then went to a nice Japanese restaurant and garden. The Japanese garden was huge and very cool. We walked around for a couple of hours and then headed back to the house to rest. Then it was out to for a nice dinner.

  • 0809 Trip Day 20 | Maui

    BRYANELKUS_19122

It was another early riser this morning. Pre dawn we pulled up to Ho’okipa to be extremely disappointed. There has been all this talk about the XXL Swell headed to Maui and we were supposed to be getting some by now. It was small, waist to head high waves coming through. It was still a good time, but we were hoping for a little more size. We were in the water until about 10am and then it was off to the Airport and on my way to Florida.

    BRYANELKUS_19149

Maui was terrific. I had a great time meeting tons of new people, old friends and seeing a new place. I learned a lot and even progressed my photography a bit. It was a great leg of the trip.

  • 0809 Trip Day 19 | Maui

    BRYANELKUS_18430

We woke up this morning just before sunrise. After looking out over Maui we narrowed down our search of waves off of Frank’s porch. We headed out to go check a couple breaks. The spot we rode was nicknames “Sandpiles” by the guys.

A few others joined us for the dawn session including, Bryan Altham, Randy Royse, Greg Sheehan and helicopter master Eddie. We rode there for a couple hours. There were some good waves that came through but the waves really backed off from the previous day.

    BRYANELKUS_18476

Tomorrow is expected to pick up a lot again so we might be able to get a morning session in before my flight. After the session we checked a couple other spots, Kanaha was too far of a swim and by the time we got out to Paia the Kona winds were already starting to crank. We headed back to Frank’s house for a little R&R, food and editing.

Julien and I again headed to Morris’ house to do a little more work to his standups. Then we went to Hookipa where julien did Standup at Lanes and I shot Lanes and Hookipa. The waves were still large and there were some rippers out again. As soon as the sun went down, Frank came out to shoot a couple portrait shots. We then ran up to Haiku to go see Daniel the board glasser and then returned home for my last night in Maui for a while.
