    Surf at Sea Haven

    BRYANELKUS_21895

Its been a while since I have have shot. Today it turned out to be rather warm and sunny. We scored a bit of a swell today though it was quite disorganized. I oped out from the session today as I spent a while on the beach waiting to see a “makeable” wave and only saw a handful. At the end of my shooting it started to clean up a bit more but i had to head back to work. I had the camera out and took a couple pics. I’m hoping tomorrow morning is going to be a lot more fun, though its going to be chilly.

    Check out more shots HERE.

    SBC_09_BuyersGuidep59a
SBC Kiteboard Magazine recently released their 2009 Buyers’ Guide Issue. I wrote an intro for a 6 page feature on Jason Slezak. Another of my favorite shots of Brandon Scheid also made it into this issue. Brandon is doing a huge tweaked Nuclear grab over my head in the Slick. Pick up your copy of SBC Kiteboard to check out the full interview with Jason.

    S-Turns Kiteboarding Downwinder

After a rather lazy start to my Sunday, I headed out to for a downwinder. Jason, Zack, Tommie and I rode from S-Turns to REAL. It was chilly at about 40 degrees. But, there were a couple fun waves out there that were shoulder high and lining up rather well.

All was going well with the light wind and the speedy current on the inside of the break. Jason was the first to go down, when his board went through his lines. Then, I nearly had my kite go into the Rodanthe house. Then Zack dropped his kite for a while, while tommie b-lined it for the finish line. But there were 4-5 really good waves that made that session more than worth it.

    Location: S-Turns -> REAL
    Wind Direction: NNE
    Wind Speed: 14-21
    Kite: 12m Boss
    Board: LF 6’2 Quad
    Wetsuit: O’Neill 5/4 Mutant

The session that finally came to be

    BRYANELKUS_21779

    Location: The Slick
    Wind Direction: WSW
    Wind Speed: 18-23
    Kite: 12m Boss
    Board: LF Mission 144cm
    Wetsuit: O’Neill 3/2 Mutant
    Bindings: LF Escalades
    Harness: DaKine Tabu

It cranked here all morning. I’m talking 25-30 WSW. Jason and I were so excited to head out for a kite at lunch. I get out there pump up my 12m and rig the lines, put on my suit and the wind dies. #@$%^! So we heard there was a little surf.

We go grab our boards and head to Mirlo. The wave is maybe waist high and barreling super fast. We drive back to work and see kites up in the slick. We go and pump up for a quick session. Two days in boots in the slick, feels so good.

    First 09 Slick Kite Session

    BRYANELKUS_21722

    Location: The Slick
    Wind Direction:
     SW
    Wind Speed: 16-21
Kite: 2009 14m Liquid Force Havoc
    Board: LF Mission 144cm
    Wetsuit: O’Neill 4/3 Mutant
    Bindings: LF Escalades
    Harness: DaKine Tabu
Today was my official first day of kiteboarding in The Slick. It was blowing about 16 when I headed out on a 2009 Liquid Force 14m Havoc and my Mission. It took a bit to get up to the slick but once I was there it picked up a little at it was on! I really enjoyed the 14m kite wasn’t too slow and had a good amount of power and turning. I look forward to getting my quiver soon!

The theme of my session was back to basics. As it was my first time in bindings in about 3 months, I was going to stick to all the basics. No unhooked tricks, back rolls and front rolls with grabs in both directions. I was out for about a half hour and then it was time to help Jason, Sam and Joe with some work on the Red Bull Slider, then it was back to work.

    Nixon Headphone Packaging

    BRYANELKUS_21714

The new Nixon headphones showed up at the shop today. I was initially impressed with the packaging. Each pair came in a soft case to protect and carry the headphones around. The soft case is then put in an open paperboard box and then in a paperboard sleeve. The box can sit on a shelf or be hung by a tab on the top of the box. The graphics and printing boasts some nice tone on tone imagery and classy logo placements. They did a great job with this, clean and simple.

    S-Turns Surf Session

    BRYANELKUS_21682
Today was sunny and warm, well warm as in 50 degrees. Which means that it was time to surf. I haven’t been surfing since I was in Hawaii. Jason called and said there was a small wave so Zack, Tommie, Beth, Melissa and I headed to S-Turns for a fun little surf session.

Mel and beth held down the beach and took photos. The water was still really cold but there were some fun little waves coming through as the tide changed.

    House Fire in Hatteras

    BRYANELKUS_20693

This morning I get in my truck to head to work. I got to the end of the street to see a fire truck sitting in the middle of the road. Great, no way to get to work. So Lulu, Mel and I just hung out for a while and took some pictures. The house on the end of the street had caught on fire.

The two older occupants of the house were airlifted to a hospital earlier in the morning but the dog died. The house was full of stuff and was smoldering. Lulu and I then started walking down Hwy12 hoping to get a ride as all the traffic stopped. REAL’s neighbor was up checking out the fire and gave us a ride to work.

Check out all of the shots here.
