A slew of kiters ventured over to South Haven Michigan this weekend to capitalize on NOAA’s forecast of strong winds and large waves. 10 miles out, the trees were moving, but as we arrived to the beach it was as calm as could be. The water dropped from last week’s session by 35+ degrees to a chilly 43 degrees. The cold water seemed to mess with the wind by shore as the buoy’s were reading a steady 35 knots all day. However, the waves were still coming in! I watch the guys out surfing and SUPing for a good hour before paddling out. They dropped significantly by the time I got in the water but they lasted all day. I only had my 6’1, I usually kite. I paddled out anyways and surfed for 2 hours, even catching a few decent waves. We made the best of the conditions with what gear we had.
