surfing portrait shoot on the beach

After a fun little surf near the Waves Pier, I got out the camera because i thought that the dark and storm immanent would make for a very cool backdrop. Ill preface that i spent most of the morning reading and studying different flash techniques, so i was lets say eager to get out and try out what i had learned. I again tried to use an off camera flash to start dialing in the strobist in me. So after the surf session I grabbed a couple friends and started shooting.

I shot with the 430 off camera (Mel was my human tripod for the shoot). I had the 580 on the camera with the diffuser. I kept the 430 at about 1/2-1/16 power and the 580 around 1/2 – 1/8 power. I just switched up the power and distances of the shots to play around and see the differences would be. The first and biggest thing i need to work on is the power and controlling the shadows. Overall I was hap with the results. Here is how they turned out:
